The National Eating Disorders Screening Program (NEDSP) is implemented during Eating Disorders Awareness Week and was held for the first time on more than 600 college campuses February 5-11, 1996. Originally designed only for college students, the program was held again in February, 1998 and was expanded to include the general population. In the year 2000, the program will expand once again, incorporating a High School component designed to address eating disorders in younger individuals. Special materials are being produced for this new component, with the assistance of the Massachusetts Eating Disorder Association, Inc., and the Children’s Hospital Outpatient Eating Disorders Program in Boston.

NEDSP represents the first large scale screening for eating disorders. The program includes an educational presentation on eating disorders and/or related topics (body image, nutrition, etc.), a written screening test and the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a health professional. It also provides individuals with information about how to help friends or family members who may be suffering from an eating disorder. NEDSP’s national office provides each site with materials for the screening and ideas for ways the program can be modified for use by colleges, hospitals, schools, or eating disorders clinics.

The National Eating Disorders Screening Program materials focus on the three main types of eating disorders – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. The goal of the program is to both raise the level of awareness about eating disorders and to encourage people who may be suffering from eating disorders to seek further help and treatment. Participating sites are encouraged to network with community groups and other internal departments, thereby creating liaisons which can continue to be utilized throughout the year. In this way, NEDSP serves as a catalyst for ongoing outreach about eating disorders and other illnesses.

The National Eating Disorders Screening Program is funded by a major grant from the McKnight Foundation. Additional funding has been provided by the Remuda Ranch, a private treatment center in Arizona.
